OSM Thome, in partnership with its second partner school, Sampaguita Village Elementary School, launched the Adopt A Ship Program, embarking on another transformative journey in enhancing students’ learning experiences through maritime education. The event was graced by OSM Thome General Manager Capt. Sherwin C. Rafael and Chief Officer Mark Lipit, alongside the AASI team led by Managing Coordinator C/O Jeffrey Aldas. The SVES community, headed by school head Mr. Philips Monterola, showed strong support for the initiative. In his opening remarks, Mr. Monterola extended a warm welcome to the guests and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to host the AAS program. He delivered an inspiring message to the students, emphasizing the significance of maritime awareness and the exciting career opportunities available within the maritime industry. Through his motivational words, he shared valuable life lessons and encouraged the students to pursue their dreams with passion and determination. Capt. Rafael and C/O Lipit also shared insights from their seafaring experiences, offering students a glimpse into life onboard ships. They highlighted the challenges and rewarding opportunities in the maritime industry, inspiring the students to explore various career opportunities in this field. The event also featured an energetic dance performance by the talented Grade 5 students, adding a lively atmosphere to the celebration. C/O Aldas officially introduced the Adopt A Ship initiative to the students, explaining the program's objectives and how it would provide them with valuable insights into the seafaring profession through weekly communication with an officer onboard ship. Over the course of the 10-week maritime awareness program, SVES students will learn about maritime concepts, the vital role of seafarers in global trade and the world economy, and explore potential careers in the maritime sector. To aid in this learning, teachers received a 2x3 meter world map, which will serve as a valuable educational tool for enhancing students' understanding of geography and tracking the journey of their adopted ship. The event concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Edgenel Viterbo, who thanked everyone involved and expressed optimism for another successful implementation of the program at SVES. The launch wrapped up with a group photo, capturing the positive energy, bright smiles, and the promise of an exciting educational journey. This collaborative effort between the maritime industry partner and the educational institution through the Adopt a Ship program aims to integrate maritime education into the school curriculum, providing equal opportunities for both boys and girls, and is dedicated to inspiring and educating the young generation about the maritime industry.
